The high season is between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Spring and early fall bring some of the area’s most gorgeous weather and is considered midseason. Destin’s off-season is between November and March. During these months the area gets a large drawl of “snowbirds” that come from the northern areas of the US and Canada to escape the cold.
The majority of Destin Florida real estate consists of beachfront high-rise condos off-highway 98 in central Destin. On the western beaches of Destin is the Destin Harbor which is a mixture of waterfront homes and condos. Many of the properties on the Destin Harbor have boat slips available. There are also Gulf front homes and condos on Holiday Isle.
The majority of Destin residents live on the north side of Highway 98 in the residential subdivisions. There is also quite a bit of Destin real estate available around some of the areas golf course communities. The Destin beaches east includes the neighborhood of Crystal Beach. The area of Crystal Beach is a mixture of low and midrise condos as well as the most single-family homes near the beach.
Past History of Destin
The history of Destin dates back to the 600s AD. Archeologists have uncovered artifacts that verify Native Americans lived there and survived from the vast amount of seafood in the local waters. About 900 years later the Spanish explorers first visited the area. In fact, today divers are still locating the wreckage of ships that sank in the area’s waters.
More Recent Destin History
The recent history of Destin traces its history to a fisherman named Leonard Destin. He moved to the area from New London, Connecticut and in about 1845 settled in this region of North-West Florida. For decades Destin and his family fished and boated in the channel that connected Pensacola and Panama City via the Gulf of Mexico. The channel was called Destin’s East Pass.
During the era of Leonard Destin, fishermen fished near the shores in small boats and used seine nets. The boats were controlled using oars. The oldest fishing boat of this kind still exists and is named the Primrose.

The boat dates back to the 1920s and has been restored. It’s on display at the Destin History and Fishing Museum. The museum shows fishing’s evolution during the Destin era. That includes things like the earliest fishing methods by Native Americans, seine nets, rods and reels, and charter fishing fleets. It’s a very interesting tour and is something you should definitely consider visiting if you’re in the area.
The year 2009 was a big year for the municipality of Destin. That’s because it celebrated its 25 anniversary. It’s not a fishing village today but visitors keep learning why people want to keep returning to the harbor/shores of Destin each year. That includes green waters, sandy beaches, great fishing, excellent dining, active lifestyle, shopping, and high-end dining. These are some of the many reasons why you should consider investing in property in Destin.
